Abstract Voice User Interfaces (VUIs) are growing in popularity as a method of controlling smart home features. However, as VUIs grow in popularity, major obstacles still negatively impact their performance and user experience. Since VUIs are invisible by nature, users find it difficult to learn the supported features and verbal commands. Discovering the correct verbal commands is made more difficult since users have a verbiage preference and developers of VUIs cannot pre-program all possible commands. We propose adaptable verbal commands, termed adaptable utterances, and Open User Models (OUMs) as a method to allow customization of a VUI’s commands to match the individual user’s preference. We review relevant research on adaptive and adaptable VUIs and identify the limitations adaptable utterances and OUMs could address. Finally, we present a sample study design to evaluate our proposed methods.

Efficiency of Speech Recognition for Using Interface Design Environments by Novel Designers
Previous studies on usability of graphical design-widgets, like menus and buttons, proposed the use of speech and non-speech (earcons and auditory icons) for solving their usability problems. In this paper we investigate speech as an input metaphor to enhance learnability, or the ability to use a system with no prior knowledge, in order to design interfaces using a multimodal interface design t...
متن کاملThe Evaluation of Adaptable Multimodal System Outputs
Adaptable multimodal systems are difficult to test. We present a methodology for evaluating parallel multimodal output which is generated in response to a specific set of user, device, and situation constraints. We focus on the generation of multiple variants of user interfaces for small-screen graphical devices with natural language voice output, within a system we term UI on the Fly. Our meth...
متن کاملSpeech Interaction with Graphical User Interfaces
This paper describes ICIE-Voice, a prototype system for supporting speech-only access to graphical user interfaces. This system is intended to work with a wide range of existing applications, but require only a minimal set of “hooks” into those applications. To achieve this, the system operates primarily by extracting information from the drawing pipeline of the user interface. This information...
متن کاملA New Trust Model for B2C E-Commerce Based on 3D User Interfaces
Lack of trust is one of the key bottle necks in e-commerce development. Nowadays many advanced technologies are trying to address the trust issues in e-commerce. One among them suggests using suitable user interfaces. This paper investigates the functionality and capabilities of 3D graphical user interfaces in regard to trust building in the customers of next generation of B2C e-commerce websit...
متن کاملThe Learnability of Mobile Application Interfaces Needs Improvement
Mobile devices have much potential to support older adults in their daily lives. However older adults have reported that they find mobile devices, such as existing mobile phones, difficult to learn to use. We argue that more research is needed to improve the learnability of mobile software applications for older adults. We present three different approaches for improving mobile device learnabil...
